Like many vehicle manufacturers, Toyota offers a standard warranty with their new cars which provides cover for 3 years or 100 000 km. This is about the industry norm, these days, and shows considerable faith from Toyota in their own products. But because their products are so popular among fleet managers, thanks to a solid reputation for durability, many Toyotas are used way past the point where their warranties have expired.
For these owners, Toyota offers a unique warranty extension for their new vehicles, which could conceivably see the buyer of a new Toyota enjoying a total warranty period of up to 8 years.
But what are the advantages of the Toyota extended warranty?
The main advantage is the fact that distance limitations of the warranty are removed in their entirety, along with dramatic increases in the duration of the warranty cover. Two different extension periods are available: either 6 or 8 years in total. This is at least double the duration of the standard warranty, which will be a huge bonus for people who cover long distances. It theoretically enables an owner to rack up hundreds of thousands of miles, yet remain covered by the genuine Toyota warranty – albeit with some changes to the terms.
Another advantage comes in the fact that the extended warranty also covers some wear items: shock absorbers and clutches can be replaced under warranty, and while brake pads are specifically excluded, there is provision to have the car's discs skimmed once as well. In this respect, the extended warranty includes some aspects of a maintenance plan.
If you're bad at remembering when to service your car (don't be!), the Toyota extended warranty also allows you to skip one scheduled service during the warranty period, without voiding the warranty. It's still better to keep up to date with servicing at your Toyota dealer, though, as all servicing and repairs have to be performed at a Toyota workshop for the warranty to remain valid – even if you skip one.
Extending the usefulness of the Toyota warranty makes a lot of sense for drivers who cover long distances and don't often replace their vehicles, but it will be just as useful for city-bound owners as well, as those wear items alone could end up costing as much as the extension itself. For anyone planning to keep their Toyota for longer than 3 years, it may just pay to invest in one of these manufacturer-designed extended warranty plans. The value of peace of mind can never be overstated...
