60 "Spekboom" trees were delivered at Omeya Golf Estate for the purchase of a Lexus Hybrid.

For every Lexus Hybrid sold, we plant 60 Spekbooms to absorb the amount of carbon produced by the Lexus Hybrid over a period of a year.

What is a hybrid car?

A hybrid car is one that uses two or more engines i.e., an electric motor and a conventional engine. The electric engine powers the car at lower speeds, and the gas engine powers it at higher speeds. A hybrid car not only conserves fuel but also produces less CO2 emissions.

Why plant Spekbooms?

Because excess carbon in the air is responsible for global warming so by planting more of these miracle workers, we are fighting climate change as it removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by acting as a carbon sponge.

Fun facts about the Spekboom

· Spekboom is an Afrikaans name that directly translates to “bacon tree”. This might be the reason why animals love them!

· The Spekboom can live up to 200 years old and can grow up to 4m tall.

· The Spekboom is one of the easiest plants to grow, you can break a piece off and stick it in the ground in an area that gets lots of sun.

· In late winter and spring, the Spekboom flowers bloom in pretty pink. These flowers are rich in nectar bringing beautiful birds to your garden.

· This low-maintenance plant can survive as little as 250-350mm of water per year and can adapt to all weather conditions from drought from frost!

· It is a soil binding plant that prevents soil erosion and stimulates biodiversity by enabling other plants to grow and live in its mini biome.

· It is high in basic nutrients, especially Vitamin C so if you are tired, break a little peace and try it because their juicy leaves can aid dehydration.

· It is a versatile plant that can grow into a hedge, bonsai, ground cover or a large bush.

Medical uses of Spekboom

· Quenches thirst, treats exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke by simply sucking the juice out of the leaves.

· Crushed leaves provide relief for blisters and chewing them treats a sore throat and mouth infections.

· The juiced leaves serve as an antiseptic and soothes rashes, insect stings, pimples, and sunburn.

On the 11^th of May 2021, we delivered 60 Spekbooms at Omeya Golf Estate that will be planted because a family purchased the breath-taking Lexus Hybrid.
